Turns out the old film camera I was using for the last 8 days of my photo project was broken…the film was completely blank. Oh well. On the bright side, I developed some expired film from a disposable I found in my friend’s shed (the owners before left a bunch of crap in there) and some of the photos are interesting. Maybe you’ll get scans later.

Week 01

April 2013
Photo a Day

I think I’ll be expanding it to a full year. Having a lot of mini-project ideas.

So, after completing the first week of this photo a day business, I have some things to say. I know that if I want to get anything out of it I have to know what it is that I want to learn. So:

  1. The big picture: every time I take a photo, asking myself “what has compelled me to take this photo?” or “what am I trying to say here?” and then execution that best enhances or demonstrates that thing.
  2. Better understanding of every function on the camera—enough to manually set everything for every photo if I wanted to.
  3. Creating more. By this I mean, a lot of the time I just see something and take a picture. I don’t as often create the whole scene myself (in a more studio-type sense).
  4. Working with film—it’s something I’m not great at. So I want to become more comfortable there, and getting good double exposures is a specific goal there.
  5. Building off that last point, getting better at different techniques/effects. Double exposure, light painting, panning, abstracts, bokeh, etc.
  6. Broadening my subject matter. I take a lot of landscape and plants/animal photos. I’ve never taken a lot of photos of people, and I think that’s somewhere I could expand.

My thought is that forcing myself to take a photo every day will make me learn these things more quickly. While there may not be something particularly inspiring every day, I think having to take something every day will encourage me to experiment more.

Day 04

sustainUC Fair

So I’m in college. And student groups and stuff. And this is a festival of a thing we put on for the different sustainability groups. This was a really good day all around.

I guess this is a different purpose than my usual photography—here I’m basically just documenting an event.

Day 03Tickets
Total crap picture! I took some more interesting ones, but upon later review I wasn’t so happy with the color accuracy, and that was kind of the point of the picture.
Anyway, I’ve been collecting tickets for just about everything since last year or before. I keep them because to me half the point of doing cool stuff is being able to remember that cool stuff you did later.

I’m almost 100% happy with this photo. Candlelight is a unique lighting situation that I’ve been trying to master.

Easter, 2013

After the egg hunt for the little ones, we did a big kids’ egg hunt, with $1-20 eggs. Amount of money was supposed to increase with difficulty.
